Regular Congregations
In the context of Mitropolia of Basarabia in the year 2026, the term "regular congregations" refers to: the parishes and monastic communities which carry out their liturgical and social activities consistently, under the jurisdiction of the Romanian Patriarchate.
Here is how these communities are organized and how they function:
1.Parishes (The basic communities)
The parish is the fundamental local unit. In 2026, the number of active parishes has increased significantly (exceeding 300 units), as more and more communities from the Republic of Moldova have joined the Mitropolia of Basarabia.
- The frequency of services: The Holy Liturgy is celebrated regularly every Sunday and on feast days. In large parishes, Vespers and Matins are performed daily.
- Language of worship: All religious services are conducted in: the Romanian Orthodox Church., this being the element of cohesion for these congregations.
2.The Organization by Dioceses
Congregations are administratively grouped into three main dioceses:
- The Archdiocese of Chișinău: It includes the parishes in the center of the country and the Transnistrian region.
- The Diocese of Bălți: Coordinates the communities in the north of the Republic of Moldova (where you are currently located). You can consult their activity on ebalti.md.
- The Diocese of Southern Basarabia: It manages the parishes in the districts of Cahul, Cantemir, Taraclia, and the Gagauzia region.
3. Monastic Communities (Monasteries)
These are "congregations" with a special way of life, focused on continuous prayer and spiritual assistance for pilgrims. Among the most active in 2026 are:
- "Saint Prophet Elijah" Monastery (Nicoreni).
- Hârbovăț Monastery (reactivated under Romanian jurisdiction).
4.Community Life and Regular Activities
Beyond the altar services, these congregations organize:
- The Parish Council: Composed of the priest and representatives of the laity, who manage the church's assets.
- Sunday School: Regular meetings for the religious education of children.
- Philanthropic Activities: In 2026, most parishes collaborate with the "Diaconia" Social Mission to provide support to vulnerable persons within the locality.
5. Recognition and Status in 2026
All these congregations are officially registered with the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Moldova. The members of these churches are recognized as being part of the great family of the Romanian Orthodox Church Bisericii Ortodoxe Române, benefiting from religious assistance, theological education, and cultural support from the Romanian state through the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova (DRRM).
